Queer Wedding Love | DIY in Peak District
This magical queer wedding was an absolute honour to be part of. Sam (they/them) and Han’s (they/them) wedding plans didn’t always look like this. But over the planning process they realised how important it was to hold space for their authentic selves. This is the epitome of a DIY wedding: curating a day perfect for them and only them. They opted for our bespoke hours package. So what DID that look like?
Queer Wedding DIY Style
🧡 Hiring an air bnb in the beautiful Peak District for a few days
🩷 Inviting a small group of friends and chosen family to join them
💚 Planning a heartfelt and emotional ceremony led by Louise @kickassgatherings - the most PERFECT celebrant for them who bought her plethora of mushroom hats and matching outfits
🩵 Creating mindful activities like colouring, ceramic painting, quizzes, board games, lawn games and of course the Nintendo Switch for entertainment
💛 Making personalised mocktails named after their animals and having food and snacks for everyone to help themselves to (including buying pizza oven that provided a tonne of entertainment for us all)
💜 Having speeches as the sun set and time for golden hour photos galore
🤍 Lighting the firepit for s’mores and sparklers and cosy pyjamas
Truly interrogating what they want
I know they were hesitant about still having a photographer around for the day when the big wedding became an intimate gathering, but when I heard their new plans I knew there was still going to be an abundance of beauty to capture. And it was indeed the warmest, safest, most inclusive space I could dream of being a part of.
As Louise so wonderfully put it in the ceremony:
“Marriage isn’t something they’d always dreamt of. In fact, when growing up, Sam was always adamant that they’d never get married because they’d never seen an example of a relationship they could relate to. Now, as adults comfortable in their own skin, being married to each other isn’t just a possibility: it’s something they’ve both decided is important to them to demonstrate their commitment and to be the representation they never saw in their formative years.“
Thank you Sam & Han for sharing your love with us all. It was a privilege to be a part of such a special day. Oh, and extra thanks to Han who patched me up when I climbed into a bramble bush for the shot and subsequently tore my shin up…it was worth it! 🤣
